How Do You Do the Butterfly Kick (Dolphin Kick)?© Felix Gmünder |
Practising the wave-like swimming technique is the key
I assume that you already are familiar with the wavelike swimming technique.Once you master the basics of wave-like motion you certainly want that your body wave becomes more efficient (I avoid the expression kick on purpose). An important technique detail is not to come in conflict with the wave created by the "pumping" action of your trunk. I show you what is important.
I t works best if another swimmer watches and gives you feedback or if he or she tape-records you.
Tips for learning and practising
By pressing your chest down you initiate the wave-like motion. Press your chest up and down in the water as gently and rhythmically as you can.
If the timing of your pumping motion is perfect you create a wave that runs from your back over your buttocks along your body (photos 2 and 3: arrow).
If your timing is wrong the wave hits your butts, which breaks your speed.
